Entering the Country

Tips for when you’re ready to enter the country.

  • QR Codes: You must have WeChat to generate a QR code for each person for entry into the country.
  • WeChat: To open a WeChat account you must have another person with WeChat authenticate you. You can ask a Chinese person at your favorite restaurant to do this for one in the family then that person can authenticate the rest of the family.

  • Immigration: If questioned at immigration stay in your box. Use English, the average expat is not expected to answer questions in the local language, it may draw more questions using the local language. Stay apolitical and neutral on all topics. Give short simple answers. Do not offer more information, it just causes confusion.\
  • During immigration, if asked to move aside or to another room to finish processing your information, stay calm. A language barrier can slow the immigration line, especially in smaller ports of entry, and it may be necessary for them to re-route you simply to keep the line moving while they find a translator. Be kind, patient and understanding.
